What are we learning about?

Reading- We are reading the Chapter Books by Arnold Lobel- Frog and Toad (series). We will begin to examine the character traits of both Frog and Toad. You may also do this at home with your nightly reading . Ask your child: how is this character? What is their personality like? What actions do they do that make you think this? Phonics/ Grammar- Phonics Chart- Chart 10. Ask your child what they notice about this chart. This week we learned old in gold and mb in lamb. In grammar we learned about indefinite pronouns.

Math- We are reviewing what we know about 2 -d shapes. Please ask your child to review the difference between halves and quarters or fourths. See last weeks post. Also, you might want to ask math riddles to find out “What shape am I ?”.shape riddles

What are we learning about?

Writing- Students are using their notes from two sources (video and text) and writing an informative writing piece on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr..

 

Volunteers -are needed to sell Nachos at the Stem Night. This is to earn grade level money. We will also need donations of: two large cheese cans, a large can of jalapenos, bowls, napkins and four extra large bags of tortilla chips. Please let your child’s teacher know if you can volunteer or donate.

What are we learning about?

Reading- We learned about nonfiction text features like a title page. A title or the name of a book can be found on this page. Also the author’s name can be found by looking closely for the words by and or written by. We are finishing up reading Jan Brett books. We will compare and contrast her stories of: The Three Snow Bears and Goldilocks’ and the Three Bears.title page

What are we learning about?

Reading- We are using comprehension strategies to help us understand what we are reading. One strategy is summarize. To summarize a reader can tell what is happening on one page or they can summarize the important events in a story.  Use these words..First, Next, After that, At the end,retell:summarize

 

Phonics/ Grammar- Please review the phonics chart. We are learning about subject and verb agreement.subject verb

Math- We are reviewing the following concepts in Chapter 5

  • Solve addition and subtraction problem situations using the strategy make a model.

What are we learning about?

 

Reading- We are using reading strategies to help us decode words. One strategy to remind your child of is: “skip it for now.” For example if they get to a word that they can not read then skip it and read the rest of the page or sentence and then go back to see if they can figure it out. This way they can use the other words to help them figure the hard word.

Week of Nov. 5

What are we learning about?

 

Reading- We are using reading strategies to help us decode words. One strategy to remind your child of is: “Flip the vowel sound.” For example if the word that they are struggling with has a long vowel sound -“huge”… instead of sounding it out /h/ /short u/ /g/ /e/ remind them to “flip the vowel” this means change it from a short sound to a long sound.

Math–Chapter 4- We are starting a new chapter it’s subtraction strategies. One strategy is use addition to subtract. Another is use ten to subtract.

 

Social Studies/Science- Students are learning how parents help their offspring survive. For example a camel mother stays with her calf for “five years.” Then, they will be creating a new species with traits from two different types of animals on Thursday or Friday. We will also be visiting the zoo this week.

 

Writing- Students will be making slime and learning how to write an Explanatory Writing paragraph. The parts are: Topic sentence, steps with sequence words and a conclusion.

 Reminders-All parents and students need to arrive by 8:30 on Tuesday morning, for the zoo fieldtrip. All chaperones please bring an empty backpack to help carry lunches.

What are we learning about?

 

Reading- We use reading strategies when reading words on a page of a book. One strategy to remind your child of is: “Get your mouth ready for the first sound.” For example the word is …Monkey the child should say Mmm. Phonics/ Grammar- Please review these phonics patterns this week: unk in trunk, wa in wash, and a in adopt. Please look for them in your reading homework. In grammar we are practicing plurals- s and es.

 

Math–Chapter 4- We are starting a new chapter it’s subtraction strategies. One strategy is count backwards to find the answer. Use a number line to help. Practice counting backwards and forwards and don’t always start at one.

Reading- We are learning about Nonfiction texts and this month we are reading many books by Gail Gibbons. Can your child identify the author’s purpose when reading a book? Did the author want to persuade, inform or entertain?

Phonics/ Grammar- Please review these phonics patterns this week: ung – strung, ank -bank, ink- wink, onk-honk. Please look for them in your reading homework. In grammar we are practicing adding adverbs. Adverbs answer questions in sentences. They often end in ly. Try asking when, how and where? The fluffy dog ran slowly to the park.

 

Math–Chapter 3- We are continuing Addition Strategies: Add in any order, Count On, Add Doubles, Doubles plus or minus 1 Add three numbers. Math review and test on FRIDAY.
